Overview

Why USAA made our list: USAA is only available to members of the military and their family members. If you qualify for a USAA policy or are stationed near Redstone Arsenal, it may be worth getting a quote. USAA’s home insurance policies come with some extra perks included, like replacement cost coverage for your home and your personal property, and offer some military-specific coverage options that could be harder to find with other insurers, like no-deductible coverage for military uniforms and equipment.

Why USAA may be the best for customer service: Technically, USAA can’t be ranked in J.D. Power because of its eligibility requirements. However, year over year, USAA consistently earns the highest score for customer service and claims satisfaction. USAA has also tied for the Best Home Insurance Company Overall Bankrate Award for three consecutive years — a strong indicator of high quality policies and customer service.

Why Auto-Owners made our list: Auto-Owners’ above-average scores from J.D. Power for customer and claims satisfaction, coupled with its below-average NAIC complaint index for its home insurance product, make it a good home insurance option. Auto-Owners exclusively sells policies through its network of agents, and online quotes are not available. This could be a negative or positive, depending on the homeowner.

Why Auto-Owners may be the best for custom policies: Auto-Owners could be a good choice for homeowners looking to tailor a unique policy. It offers some more standard endorsements, like water backup, scheduled personal property, replacement cost coverage, identity theft and equipment breakdown. Auto-Owners also offers more specialized options like inland flood (which is slightly different than a traditional flood policy), appliance leaks, food spoilage from power failure and other choices.

Why State Farm made our list: State Farm is the largest home insurance company in the country and in the state of Alabama. State Farm is one of the most well-known names in the insurance industry, partially because of its size and its breadth of coverage offerings. With State Farm, homeowners can insure their car, life, get an umbrella policy, pet coverage and more. State Farm was also one of the small handful of insurers that scored above average in both J.D. Power studies (customer satisfaction and claims satisfaction).

Why State Farm may be the best for local agents: State Farm has an impressive network of 19,000 agents across the country, with over 20 offices throughout Huntsville. This could be especially helpful for homeowners with more than one State Farm policy looking for a dedicated agent for all their insurance needs.

Why Travelers made our list: Travelers could be another strong option for homeowners looking for tailored coverage. On top of the basics (dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use and liability protection), Travelers' policies can be outfitted with several different add-on coverages — especially for valuable property. Travelers offers four different ways to insure valuables: a personal articles floater, jewelry and valuable items coverage and special personal property coverage.

Why Travelers may be best for eco-friendly homes: Travelers may be of particular interest to homeowners with eco-friendly homes. Not only does the company offer a discount of up to 5 percent to homes that are LEED certified, but it also offers special protection for green homes. With green home coverage, Travelers may help with the added cost of repairing your home with eco-conscious materials after a covered loss.

How much is home insurance in Huntsville, Alabama?

The cost of home insurance in Huntsville is 13 percent less than the cost of home insurance in Alabama. For comparison, home insurance in Alabama is 21 percent more than the national average cost of home insurance of $2,270. Alabama’s higher home insurance rates are partially due to the state’s risk of natural disasters. Alabama is prone to hurricanes (especially along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico) and tornadoes. Huntsville’s more northern position may help shield it from the worst of the hurricane damage, but puts it closer to the Dixie Alley tornado path. This added risk could make affordable home insurance in Huntsville a little harder to find.

Huntsville rates by credit tier

Homeowners with excellent credit tend to receive the cheapest rates. Homeowners with bad credit are generally seen as more likely to file home insurance claims, so insurance companies usually charge them higher rates to account for it. Building credit can take time, but if you’re struggling to curb high home insurance costs, taking the steps to do it may result in some serious savings. Our research shows that homeowners with excellent credit pay 55 percent less on average compared to homeowners in Huntsville with poor credit.

Huntsville rates by home age

How old your home is can also affect how affordable your home insurance rates are. Broadly speaking, older homes are usually more expensive to insure than new builds. Older homes, particularly ones that are built with materials that are more expensive now than they were 30 or 40 years ago, could make a rebuild after a total loss cost more for the insurer.

If you’re really stumped on lowering your home insurance costs, don’t neglect your insurance deductible. A higher deductible home insurance policy could result in a lower premium, as you are transferring more of the financial risk away from the insurance company and onto you. Credit: Rates were calculated based on the following insurance credit tiers assigned to our homeowners: “poor, average, good (base) and excellent.” Insurance credit tiers factor in your official credit scores but are not dependent on that variable alone. The following states do not allow credit to be a factor in determining home insurance rates: California, Maryland, Massachusetts.

Year built: Rates were calculated based on the following years built for homes and assigned to our homeowners: “1959, 1982, 1992, 2010, 2016 (base) and 2020.”

Bankrate Scores

Our 2024 Bankrate Score considers variables our insurance editorial team determined impacts policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These rating factors include a robust assessment of each company’s product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. Each factor was added to a category, and these categories were weighted in a tiered approach to analyze how companies perform in key customer-impacting categories.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.
