Er waren al eerder volledig op de computer gemaakte films, Toy Story, bijvoorbeeld, maar Final Fantasy is de eerste film met - min of meer - levensechte personages. Het op de Final Fantasy games gebaseerde verhaal: in de toekomst is de aarde verwoest, de schaarse overlevenden moeten zich staande houden in een wereld vol buitenaardse spoken. De briljante wetenschapper Aki Ross krijgt de opdracht de wezens te verslaan. Aan de filmbeeldjes hebben vier jaar lang een kleine duizend computers gerekend (waarvan de helft van de tijd voor Aki's 60 duizend haren), met soms oogstrelend resultaat.
In de originele, Engelstalige versie zijn de stemmen te horen van oa Ming-Na (als Aki Ross), Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames en Steve Buscemi.
