Why did Kratos lose his chains? ›

Though considering how the chains on Kratos' arms were loosened upon Zeus' death, it could simply be implied that he no longer had use for the blades with his quest (and their main purpose) was complete.

Kratos, at the peak of his task to kill the God of War, had the Blades of Chaos stripped away from him after he defended his family in one of Ares's Illusions. With the Blades taken away from him, Ares manipulated the Blades to once more kill Kratos' family, while a helpless Kratos watched in horror.

In exchange for winning the battle for him, Ares gave Kratos the Blades of Chaos and made him the gods' herald.
