Homemade elderberry gummies will make taking elderberry syrup something your kids actually look forward to!
Why Take Elderberry Syrup?
In my post showing you how to make homemade elderberry syrup, we talked about all the benefits of elderberries.
Elderberries have been shown to possibly be effective in fighting the flu (among many other things). As stated on WebMD:
A specific elderberry juice syrup seems to relieve flu symptoms and reduce the length of time the flu lasts when taken by mouth within 48 hours of the first symptoms. Taking elderberry lozenges within 24 hours of the first symptoms also seems to reduce flu symptoms. Relief seems to occur within 2 to 4 days of treatment for most people. Taking a product that contains elderberry juice and echinacea also seems to relieve symptoms and reduce the length of time flu lasts. It seems to work similar to the prescription drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Those are great reasons to try elderberry syrup during cold and flu season!
Elderberry Syrup Gummies
Despite the amazing benefits of elderberry syrup, my kids don’t always look forward to taking it. Unless I turn it into gummies, that is!
Whenever I have a batch of these in the refrigerator, they actually beg for them!
And, they’re a lot less messy than the syrup. These are a win/win!
Supplies Needed to Make Elderberry Gummies
You only need a few ingredients to take your elderberry syrup to the next level. Gelatin is the key ingredient!

Heat 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling.
Put 1 cup elderberry syrup in a large bowl and gradually sprinkle 1/4 cup gelatin on top. While gradually sprinkling the gelatin on the elderberry syrup, stir very gently with a fork to combine, just enough to moisten the gelatin powder.
Let the gelatin sit for a minute until it starts to gel a bit.
Add hot water to gelatin/syrup mixture and whisk together until well-mixed and gelatin has dissolved.
Pour mixture into molds (or use a small dropper to carefully drop into the molds).My kids love the little gummy bear silicone molds.
We also have a Lego one which is a favorite. If you don’t want to use a mold, you can also just put the gelatin into a glass dish and cut in squares after it firms up.
Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until firm.
Remove gummies from molds and place in an airtight container.
We take a few of these daily (depending on the size of the mold you used, the amount will vary) if we’ve been exposed to illness.

Elderberry syrup gummies are an easy way to get kids excited about taking elderberry syrup! First make your own elderberry syrup and then turn it into gummy bears with this simple recipe!

Because elderberry may stimulate the immune system, it could interfere with medications taken to suppress the immune system. These medications include corticosteroids (prednisone) and medications used to treat autoimmune diseases. People with organ transplants should also avoid elderberry.
Are There Elderberry Side Effects? There is a downside to consuming too much elderberry, and that is an upset stomach. Just like with any high fiber fruit, eating too much can cause stomach pain, upset stomach, and diarrhea.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn't take it. Other parts of the elder tree, including the branches, twigs, leaves, roots, and seeds, are toxic. They have a type of cyanogen called glycoside. People with immune problems might have reactions to elderberry.
Although there is no specific time of day to take elderberry, you'll maximize its benefits by using it consistently on a regular basis. You can choose whether to use it morning, afternoon or evening. It may be best to use elderberry for short periods of time to support healthy immune function, and then take a break.
Stay on the safe side and stick to food amounts. "Autoimmune diseases" such as multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or other conditions: Elderberry might cause the immune system to become more active. This could increase the symptoms of autoimmune diseases.
The uncooked berries, leaves, bark, and roots of the elderberry plant contain the chemicals lectin and cyanide, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
There are several elderberry supplement options and preparations, such as gummies, lozenges, syrups and teas, but the most popular and best way to consume elderberry is in syrup form.
Elderberry is rich in antioxidants, which can help lower inflammation as well as cholesterol and blood pressure. “Elderberry's phytonutrients and fiber content helps to lower the amount of cholesterol circulating [in your blood] by binding to [the cholesterol] and expelling it from the body,” Best said.
As always, we recommend you keep an eye on the consistency, taste and smell of the syrup. Do not consume if it starts growing white mold, smells bad, tastes bad or fizzes upon opening.
This makes foods rich in antioxidants a valuable alternative in the prevention or treatment of obesity. In one study, elderberry was able to reduce weight gain, lower body fat percentage and lower cholesterol levels.
The most potent form of elderberry is raw elderberry syrup (Dr. Mobley suggests syrup made with organic, fresh-pressed elderberries). The syrup is absorbed most quickly by the body—whereas if you take elderberry gummies, capsules, lozenges, or teas, they're less potent and/or take longer for the body to digest.
Once open, store in fridge and enjoy syrup and shrub within 4 months and the juice within 4 weeks. Of course some people report open syrup & shrub keeping well for more than a year in the fridge. HOW DO YOU USE ELDERBERRY SYRUP? We enjoy elderberry syrup, shrub or juice straight up served in a spoon or shot glass.
Whether you try an elderberry gummy is up to you. While some evidence supports their use for reducing cold symptoms, it isn't enough that these claims can be made definitively. If you decide to try elderberry gummies, make sure to choose a high quality product that contains a research-backed dose of elderberry.

By comparison, my homemade syrup is about a quarter of the price of over-the-counter options. The other draw back of over-the-counter versions is the sweetener, usually it's glucose. My recipe uses raw honey as a sweetener, which has so many healing properties.
